The Swedish Stroke Register (Riksstroke)

Registry category: Diseases of the nervous system

Certification level: 1

Central personal data controller (CPUA): Region Västerbotten

Stroke is one of our most common diseases with very large consequences for patients, family and the society. Costs for the society have been estimated to 18 billion SEK per year. During the last years large advances have been made in the possibilities to treat stroke.

The purpose of Riksstroke (The Swedish Stroke Register) is to contribute to a high and even quality across all parts of the country. Riksstroke displays the components of stroke management and outcomes openly towards the general public, patients, professionals and decision makers, and is a tool for follow up of the Swedish Guidelines for Stroke Care issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare.

All hospitals who manage acute stroke participate in Riksstroke. In 2020 about 21 000 patients with stroke were registred. TIA is also included in Riksstroke, with about 8000 registrations per year. Since 2020 subarachnoid hemorrhages are also registred in Riksstroke. Pediatric stroke is a sub-registry of Riksstroke.
