Cleft lip and palate (CLP)

National Quality Registry for Cleft Lip and Palate

Registry category: Surgery and plastic surgery

Certification level: 1

Central personal data controller (CPUA): Region Skåne

Depending on the extent of the cleft, CLP can affect several structures and functions to varying degrees, such as eating, ear function, hearing, speech, development of facial growth, teeth/occlusion, and appearance.

The cleft is operated to provide as good prerequisites for normal development as possible. Many children also need orthodontic treatment and sometimes several surgeries are needed. If there is a cleft in the palate, speech therapy may be needed.

Modern treatment of CLP is a long-term treatment, where the final result can only be seen when the child is fully grown in the latter part of adolescence.

The purpose of the CLP registry is:

  • To evaluate the results of the treatment methods through follow-up of the development of appearance, teeth, occlusion, and speech
  • To ensure equal treatment for children and young people born with CLP in Sweden
  • To expand the cooperation between Sweden's CLP canters
  • To improve the CLP care
