Dependency disorders are one of our most widespread public health problems. There are 780,000 people in Sweden today who abuse or are dependent on alcohol, 80,000 who abuse narcotics, and 65,000 who misuse pharmaceuticals.

It is estimated that at least 2,000 people in Sweden die every year from alcohol abuse and 400 from drug abuse. These figures become significantly higher if you also include accidents, suicide and other medical conditions related to substance abuse. The care needs of this patient group are often complex, with both psychiatric and somatic co-morbidity.

National guidelines have been in place for substance abuse and dependency since 2007. Despite this, there is reason to believe that healthcare interventions vary significantly nationwide.
